AI Overviews
Google's AI-generated answers that appear above the classical search results.
Full definition
AI Overviews is Google's SGE-era feature that uses Gemini to synthesize an answer from multiple web sources and presents it above the blue links. Each overview cites 3–8 source pages, and being one of those sources is now the single most valuable position in Google search.
AI Overviews appear on a growing share of queries — especially informational and 'best X' commercial queries. They cap click-through to the classical results, so the only way to capture traffic is to be cited inside the overview itself.
Example
Search 'best running shoes' on Google → AI Overview with a synthesized answer and 5 cited brand sites at the top.

Is AI Overviews the same as SEO?
No. AI Overviews is one piece of the broader GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) program that sits on top of classical SEO. The two work together — classical SEO gets you crawled and indexed; AI Overviews is part of what gets you cited by AI engines.
Do I need a tool to implement AI Overviews?
For most teams, a free scanner like OptimAIze is enough to identify what's missing. Implementation is usually a copy-paste of generated markup or a small code change — no specialist tool required.
